About

Meet Becky Pastner

Strategic thought partner and leadership coach for people creating a brighter tomorrow

Like many leaders, my career began with hard work and strong individual contributions that led to promotions and increasing responsibility. What I learned along the way was that leading people is a completely different challenge—and often a lonely one.

Sound familiar?

In 2022, I chose to step away from my executive role at a major health foundation to write my next professional chapter. Today, I wear several hats: adjunct professor, strategic thought partner, facilitator, and leadership coach. I first saw the transformative power of coaching as a funder investing in nonprofit leaders—and later experienced it myself as a coaching client.

My work is grounded in a simple belief: adaptive, values-driven leaders have the power to transform culture, shift systems, and create lasting impact in the world.

Born and raised in Vermont, I attended college in Philadelphia before moving to Austin in 2000 for an AmeriCorps role. That “one year in Texas” became a 20+ year career in policy advocacy, health philanthropy, and nonprofit capacity building—work that continues to shape the lens I bring to every coaching and consulting engagement.

Experience and expertise

For more than 20 years I have dedicated my career to serving others and creating a more just and equitable society.

Career

My career has always been about service and impact, though the focus has shifted over time. I started with a global view, working on federal immigration policy, then turned my attention to Texas state education policy, and later spent 16 years strengthening regional public health through philanthropy at St. David’s Foundation. Now, I’ve found a new way to carry that commitment forward—by working directly with individuals and organizations through coaching, advising, and teaching. I also collaborate with Luminosa Research on select projects.

Education

I earned a BA in Political Science from Haverford College, and a MPAff from the University of Texas at Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs, where I completed a certificate in nonprofit management. I am certified in Leadership and Performance Coaching from Brown University/ACT Leadership, and am an Associate Certified Coach, credentialed by the International Coaching Federation (ICF). A lifelong learner, I am a proud graduate of Leadership Austin's Essential Class and the McBee Fellowship with Austin Area Research Organization.

Community

I serve on the Legacy Leadership Circle of The New Philanthropists, the Leadership Council of American Gateways, and the Board of Gabrielle’s Wings. I am also a weekly meal delivery volunteer for Meals on Wheels Central Texas.
